Where to start on a refit

Deal with water first. Bilge pumps, impellers and through-hull fittings are the items that turn a small problem into a big one, and an impeller is a consumable rather than a fitting, so it belongs on the annual list alongside anodes. After that, shade and seating are what change how the boat feels to use.

How often should a raw water pump impeller be replaced?

Once a season or every 200 hours is the usual interval, and sooner if the engine has run dry even briefly. A failed impeller sheds vanes into the cooling system, so replacing it on schedule is cheaper than chasing the pieces out of a heat exchanger.

What stainless steel grade should marine deck fittings be?

AISI 316 is the marine grade and is what you want for anything exposed to salt spray, because the added molybdenum resists pitting. AISI 304 is fine for interior and trailer-boat fittings that get rinsed and stored dry.

What size bilge pump does a boat need?

Rate the pump against hull size and how much water the boat can realistically take on, and remember published flow figures are open-flow, so real output through hose and a skin fitting is lower. Most boats are better served by two smaller pumps at different heights than one large one.

What is a rocket launcher on a boat?

It is the rack of rod holders mounted across the rear bar of a bimini or hardtop, named for the way the rods angle back. It keeps rods upright and out of the way while under way and is usually bought as part of a bimini or T-top assembly.
