Keeping a trailer alive in salt water

Rinse it every time, including the inside of the chassis rails where water sits. Wheel bearings are the item that strands people, so repack them annually and check for heat after the first stop on a long tow. LED lights submerge far better than incandescent ones because there is no hot filament to crack when it hits cold water.

Why do boat trailer lights fail so often?

Incandescent globes run hot, and dunking a hot globe in cold water cracks the filament or draws water past the seal. Sealed LED units have no filament and no heat cycle of that kind, which is why they survive submersion far longer.

How often should boat trailer wheel bearings be serviced?

Repack them at least annually, and more often if the trailer is immersed regularly in salt water. Bearing buddies help by keeping positive pressure in the hub, but they do not replace a strip and repack.

Do I need transom tie-downs as well as a bow winch?

Yes. The winch strap and safety chain stop the boat sliding backwards, but nothing stops the hull lifting off the rollers over a bump unless the transom is strapped down. Two transom straps are standard practice.

Should boat trailer rollers or skids be replaced on a schedule?

Replace them on condition rather than a set interval. Flat spots, splits and seized rollers are the signs, and a seized roller will drag on the hull every launch, which marks gelcoat quickly.
